Responsibilities of CJP Iftikhar Chaudhary Now

By Ghazala Khan • Mar 17th, 2009

As one battle has completed, another one is looming now. Now the lawyers, civil society and the political workers have played their part to get the Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary restored, now its solely incumbent upon the judiciary in the leadership of Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary to truly liberate the judicial system and to set the right course for an independent judiciary which decides and acts above any fear or pressure.

The biggest challenge right now for the current judiciary is to nullify the acts of Nov. 3 2007 by the dictator General Pervez Musharraf. Though the judges who took oath under PCO after that are to be decided upon by the parliament as been inscribed in the charter of democracy (CoD) signed by major political parties in London, judiciary has to first get itself filtered from the black sheep.

Asif Ali Zardari has appointed many judges recently who are his party members, some are his ticket holders in the elections and some are downright criminals like the chief justice of Islamabad high court, Mr. Bilal. Pakistan doesn’t want symbolic restoration of the judiciary. Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary should compel his other judges in apex court, high courts and other justice avenues to dissiminate justice speedily.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary must always remember that how much Pakistan and its people have paid for his restoration. Not for his person, but for the liberation of judiciary as institution. Rule of law and supremacy of constitution are the buzzwords which have inspired millions in Pakistan.

Public is watching Mr. Chief Justice.
